She Needs Both: Why We Create Budget-Friendly Travel Guides for Families Like Ours

We focus on budget-conscious travel for many reasons. Today, one of those reasons snuck up on me.

We have been waiting months for one of our kids to get the therapy she needs. We've been on waitlists. We've supplemented with therapies that just don't meet her needs, but were better than nothing. The long awaited therapy appointment is here - just 2 days away.

Today, the therapy office called to notify us they no longer accept our child's insurance. We can keep the appointment if we change to self pay, which will be hundreds of dollars a month. Or we can be placed at the bottom of the waitlist to have time to save up - or look for another facility.

But we're already on the other facility's waitlists and the estimated wait is over 1 year at all of them. So, we will pay, with 2 days notice, because it's what she needs. And we will continue to make the most of traveling by choosing locations that coincide with our homeschool and figure out how to figure them in because she also needs a childhood. She needs to experience awe and wonder and beautiful places and wonderful stories just as much as she needs to work on her skills in the therapy gym. Hearing "this is where Jo lived!" while sitting in the garden at Orchard House is just as important as watching her master a hard earned physical skill.

So, fellow homebodies, we'll keep creating budget-friendly travel and lesson guides for families with varying needs, because we know we're not alone. Most of us don't have deep pockets to pull from, and we need every dollar to stretch. But our kids deserve it all: the therapy gym and the garden at Orchard House. The hard-earned skills and the awe-inspiring moments. We're here to help you give them both.

Happy adventuring!
